Aluminium solutions for shipbuilding
Lightweight and sustainable
Based on our long experience of rolling high-strength 5000-series alloys, our VIA Maris products are a perfect solution for applications in the marine and offshore industry – providing sustainable, easy-to-work, low carbon footprint material. And this in 2 alloy versions: Standard VIA Maris (equals 5083 alloy type) and our new, improved premium version VIA Maris Njørdal – providing superior strength compared to standard 5083 alloy.
Efficient shipbuilding
Our VIA Maris plates combine high strength with excellent bending properties and superior weldability. Casting of the raw material with a high amount of recycled content ensures a low carbon footprint – well below world or even European average – thus fulfilling the increasing demand for sustainable solutions in the ship- and yachtbuilding industry. VIA Maris products are produced in our German rolling mills – offering a super-wide range of available dimensions: Thicknesses of up to 12 mm and widths up to 2500 mm are possible – offering our customers optimized nesting possibilities and thereby increasing efficiency of material usage.
STRONG BENEFITS
VIA Maris
- Standard 5083 alloy type
- Available in 3 tempers: H111, H321, H116
- Superior bending properties: easy to form
- Tight thickness tolerances far below classification rerquirements
PREMIUM ALLOY
VIA Maris Njørdal
- Improved version of 5083
- Available in 2 tempers: H111, H116
- 15% gain in strength
- Enhanced safety
- Optimized weight
Strength 15% above traditional 5083
VIA Maris Njørdal enables lighter and safer constructions.
It reduces both weight and production costs, thereby facilitating the construction of high-quality and efficient ships. At the same time it does not compromise fatigue strength – structures made of formed and welded VIA Maris products exhibit extraordinarily high rigidity.
Both products, VIA Maris and VIA Maris Njørdal, can be fabricated and welded using the same processes and parameters. For welding VIA Maris Njørdal, we recommend filler wires type 5556A or 5183 preferably with Mg content > 4,6%.
*Values of temper H111 represent strength after welding. For details, see our technical datasheets.
CUSTOMER REQUIREMENTS FIRST
Durability
VIA Maris Marine Sheet and Plate withstand harshest marine environments, even if left unpainted. Their unique thermo-dynamic processing and a dedicated stabilization heat treatment lead to excellent results in testing according to the requirements of ASTM B928: In the Nitric Acid Mass Loss Test (NAMLT), their mass loss is lower than 50% of the maximal permitted value.
Low carbon footprint
Our externally (DNV) verified carbon footprint is significantly lower than the European average: Speira's sustainability approach takes the complete value chain into account, thereby showing a complete picture.
- Cradle-to-gate: We model our carbon footprint from the mine or from the scrap to the finished final product.
- We use metal from various primary and recycled sources.
- For full transparency and a clear competitive advantage.
